Terence Conran is one of the worlds best-known designers. As founder of Habitat, he brought good, affordable, modern design to the general public, transforming the way our homes look; and as restaurateur, he has changed the face of eating out in London with his acclaimed restaurants, which include Bibendum, Quaglino's, Sartoria and the Butlers Wharf Gastrodrome. He opened The Conran Shop on Londons Fulham Road in 1973, and others have since followed in Paris, Hamburg, Tokyo, Fukuoka, Melbourne and Marylebone High Street. His latest retail concept Conran Collection, opened in London in 1998; while from late 1999 the Conran group will have a major presence in New York with the redeveloped Bridgemarket site underneath the 59th Street (Queensboro) bridge, including a furniture and home furnishings store, a restaurant, a brasserie and a bar-café. In 1989, Terence opened the Design Museum at Butlers Wharf, the first of its kind in the world. His original House Book set new standards in illustrated book publishing and was an international best-seller, a success he repeated with the publication of The Essential House Book in 1994. His most recent books have included Terence Conran on Design and, with Dan Pearson, The Essential Garden Book.
