However, the fact that she came from a wealthy Connecticut family and had started her career on Broadway did not endear her to the Hollywood establishment. She was not a lady who left much to chance or the studios; her support came from the press and the public. This biography is Sheridan Morley's tribute to Katharine Hepburn. She married only once and had no children; the things she cared for most were Spencer Tracy, with whom she had a 30-year friendship, her privacy, and her career, perhaps in that order. The latter is in itself a testament to survival in an evanescent profession.
