Synopsis
Hot on the heels of the last volume, Asuna is engaged in combat with Francis' Rick Dom. She's too slow in attempting to attack (due to her hesitating) and Francis almost takes her down but, Yahagi intervenes using Remote in Synchro Mode while he extricates Shin. However, Asuna takes the controls back when Francis uses techniques of deception to hide which hand his slashes will come from. Asuna counters with her own left-handed strike and slices off the Rick Dom's wrist. Akira intervenes with his Kaempfer and extricates Francis with a little help from long-distance ship fire. Out of immediate danger, Asuna returns to the ship. Instructor Linny is buried via ejection into space. Commander Toole discovers that Asuna is far more of a Newtype project than he realized. However, Ecole will not stop now: the testing shall continue, this time, with live combat. Asuna visits Shin while he recovers from his wounds (mostly a few rib fractures). Asuna tries to face her fears and wonders if she killed someone to protect Shin, if he'd still love her. He can hardly turn her away, or say that he wouldn't do the same if that's what it came down to...Training resumes soon. Meanwhile, Marie's people come to suspect that their job's bogus and there really aren't anti-Spacenoid hardliners after all. On the other hand, they're being paid; and to Akira, well, it's fun, so why stop now? Thus resolved, they set out to destroy all the Salamis ships. If the kids get in their way, this time they shall show no mercy. And so, the real "war" begins...The attack occurs during a training session, taking Asuna and others off guard. Asuna is instantly paralyzed as her Newtype senses pick up the death cries of those slain in the fighting. (For detailed information at a glance, consult the "Battle File" in the translation.) As Federation forces try in vain to bring the situation under control, Yahagi is aided by Kerry during the battle, then Erisia. However, Erisia's initial success makes her let her guard donw; her Canal is shot up by a Zaku. She survives, but her MS is effectively useless. Yahagi takes her aboard. At the last second, Yahagi uses Remote to make Kerry's MS partially evade a shot from Akira, losing only a leg. However, Kerry undergoes a complete nervous collapse. As Akira maneuvers to a position where he can blast both Yahagi and Kerry simultaneously, Erisia's quick thinking saves them, using Remote to make her own damaged MS ram Akira. (Since it has no pilot, Akira is unable to sense "pressure" from the pilot, taking him by surprise unexpectedly.) Yahagi makes a fateful decision to trust control of Kerry's MS to Erisia while he controls his own, using himself as a decoy while Erisia launches a surprise attack. However, when crunch time comes, Erisia misses. Akira seems to use one of the Salamis ships as a shield but, instead, he happily blows the bridge sky-high. Using the resulting explosion as cover, Akira fires - fortunately, only doing surface damage to Kerry's MS thanks to Erisia's blocking with the shield. However, Akira soon strikes once more. Only timely intervention by the injured Shin saves them for the moment. The damaged ship finally explodes fully but, fortunately, Yahagi and the others are not caught up in it. Asuna senses that Shin is in danger and remembers their previous conversation. She fights through the voices in her head and finally seizes control, blazing a fiery path towards the battle. Shin, of course, is no match for Akira. Akira demonstrates the pure aggression of the Kaempfer design by drawing his second beam saber and overwhelming Shin. However, he is once again foiled by timely support. Grievously angered, he fires with twin bazookas and blows Kerry's MS away. He fires at Yahagi...only to have the bazooka rounds shot in mid-flight! Asuna has arrived. A Zaku tries to stop her against Akira's warnings and is quickly taken down. Akira knows this is the main event - Newtype vs. Newtype, Asuna vs. Akira. (Continued in vol. 5...) - Jeremiah Bourque. Apparently "Remote" in Ecole is designed to work even in cramped quarters and with Minovski jamming enabled, meaning that it's not a system reliant on radio waves. The explanation does not go beyond this but based on past experience, using Minovski particles themselves as a primitive communications system is possible and is supposedly the basis of controlling "bits" (remote control weapons).
