First impression of the true first edition, with 'First published 1988 by Bloodaxe Books Ltd.' on the printer's page, with no mention of reprints. ***Near fine in illustrated glossy card covers with black titles to the spine and front cover. The covers are uncreased and unfaded. No tears. Internally also near fine, with pages bright white. Spine tight. No inscriptions. ***218mm x 138mm. 80 pages. ***'High above the plain, beyond the village of Hum, up where the mountainside melts into cloud, lies an unmapped plateau. Here people appear out of thin air. And disappear. Or so they say. Mistila. ***Sylvia Kantaris and Philip Gross have been there. Or so they claim. Her son was in Columbia, and he told her about the place, Mistila., in an air-letter. She mentioned it to Philip Gross. ***All poets steal. Gross was no exception. Almost by return post, he sent her a poem. She replied. In three months they populated the Mistilan plateau with a cast of characters who live, eke out their livelihoods, and die. Like us, almost. ***In the strange atmospheric conditions of Mistila, you may glimpse Cornish mineshafts to a background of Andean condor music. You may feel vertigo, hilarity or grief, see mirages of the real world and its threats. If you return, you'll wonder what is true, in this place conjured out of air.' (Quote taken from the back cover). ***First impression of the true first edition, published as a paperback original, in very nice collectable condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Add to basketFirst edition, first printing. Inscribed by the authors. Original illustrated card wraps. A near fine copy, tight and square, showing minor signs of shelfwear. The page block is a little dusty, and there's a faint (barely visible) diagonal crease to the lower right of the front cover. A nice copy. A lovely example of a book whose inscriptions tell a story. To the reverse of the front cover there is a birthday inscription to Pat Borthwick from "Margaret", ending by expressing "Hope [that] you meet the /other half of / "the author" / one day". The title page shows what must be the inscription alluded to by Margaret, from Sylvia Kantaris (the first half of "the author"), in black ink, "Pat! / Lots of love, Sylvia x". Intersecting this is a second inscription, in blue, from the other half of the author, "So pleased our paths crossed. Philip", appropriately crossing the first inscription. Below this is another (!) signature from Philip Gross followed by, in parenthesis, "(21 years on at StAnza)". Provenance: from the library of the multi-award winning poet Pat Borthwick. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
